Back in 2001, founder Mark O’Donnel  was enrolled in a Production & Operations course for my MBA. His assignment was to invent a fictitious product and come up with a production plan for its manufacture. He remembered that a recent rock climbing outing had him padding edges with backpacks and jackets, preserving their ropes but destroying their gear. There were no readily available rope protectors at the local climbing stores so he decided that this fictitious device would be a commercially available rope protector for the everyday climber at an affordable price. After returning home for Thanksgiving break, he asked his father, a seasoned mechanical engineer, for his input. In the space of an evening they had an idea for an actual prototype and a family business was born.

Today, the Spiroll^® has evolved into a climbing, rescue, rope access, maritime, and industrial product line, with distribution all over the world and tens of thousands of units sold. 

In August 2024 Nixon Marine Global LLC acquired the brand, trademarks and equipment, in order to continue the manufacturing of the product range. We are proud to preserve manufacture of this product ourselves right here in Maine and procure all supplies and services from U.S. companies, many of whom are local as well.
